USA Online Sportsbooks have installed the Buckeyes as a 28-point favorite in this one, with the over/under sitting at 47 1/2 points.

Elsewhere around the country the Miami hurricanes will take on Florida A&M University. The Hurricanes are expected to do well this season, and contend for the ACC Championship.  Led by quarterback Jacory Harris on offense, Miami is very balanced, and can beat a defense through the air or on the ground.  At time last season the hurricanes struggled on defense, but they off season has given them ample time to work.  Head coach Randy Shannan got Miami off to a flying start last season, and looks to do the same in 2010.  Oddsmakers have installed the Hurricanes as an asserted favorite in this match up.

The USC Trojans take the field finally after a long off season filled with NCAA Investigations, coaching changes, players coming and players going. Head coach Lane Kiffin and his players will likely find a sanctuary on the field of play, in their opener against Hawaii on Thursday night.  Oddsmakers have established the Trojans as a 21-point favorite to defeat Hawaii in this on.

Another intriguing game taking place matches Utah against Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh came within a score of winning the Big East conference last season, but lost to Cincinnati in what was a de facto conference championship game.  The Panthers begin the season as the No.15 team in the country, with their sights set on winning the Big East.  On the other side of the ball, the Utes of Utah come in looking to notch a big win in the opener to propel momentum throughout the season.  USA Online Sportsbooks have set the Panthers as a three-point favorite, with the over/under at 49 points.

Out of the SEC, South Carolina will begin their season on ESPN in prime time against Southern Miss. Head coach Steve Spurrier will be expected to contend for the SEC East title this season with Florida and Georgia, and anything less will not sit well with the Gamecock faithful.  The Gamecocks are a 13-point favorite over Southern Miss in this one, which will take place at 7:45 pm Est on ESPN on Thursday night.

Kicking off the 2010 College Football season will be Wake Forest out of the ACC against Presbyterian of the Big South. Wake Forest enters this season as a wild card, with many not knowing exactly what to expect from the Demon Deacon in the 2010 College Football Season.

Canadian net gambling revenues remain flat

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Net revenue from provincial government-run lotteries, video lottery terminals, casinos and slot machines not in casinos totalled Cdn$13.75-billion in 2009, essentially unchanged from the year before, Statistics Canada reported this week.

Note: all dollar figures in this article are CDN.

The monitoring agency revealed that revenue from gambling plateaued at roughly $13.7 billion in 2007, and has remained at a consistent level ever since.

In 2009, casino gambling accounted for 34% of the net revenue, with lotteries making up a further 26%; slot machines outside casinos, mainly at racetracks 21%, and VLTs 19%.

Profits from gambling totalled just over $6.7 billion in 2008, or 4.7% of all provincial revenue.

Using 2008 numbers, Stats Canada reports that gambling participation and average expenditures increased with household income. For example, 51% of households with incomes of less than $20,000 gambled, spending an average of $395.

Among households with incomes of $80,000 or more 78% gambled, spending an average of $555 in 2008.

Provincially, average household spending on gambling in 2008 was highest in Saskatchewan at $720, followed by Alberta at $645. It was lowest in Quebec at $390.

Tasmanian opposition party supports government’s tax deal with Betfair

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Despite opposition from the Green Party, a Tasmanian government proposal to give online betting giant Betfair a A$6 million tax break has been passed in the Lower House, thanks to support from the official Opposition Liberal Party.

ABC reports that the government’s bill will reduce Betfair’s state tax contribution from nearly A$8 million to about A$2 million a year.

Liberal spokesman Peter Gutwein told the Tasmanian parliament that while the deal represents a big drop in tax revenue, it is better than no revenue at all.

“We ran the very real risk that this betting exchange would vacate the state,” he said.

The five Green Party MPs voted against the legislation, with spokesman Kim Booth voicing his party’s contempt for the tax breaks.

“How low does a government go to simply just retain a business here on the basis it will create a few jobs?” he said.

Greens leader Nick McKim and Greens Cabinet secretary Cassy O’Connor abstained from Monday’s cabinet deliberations on the legislation.

South African provincial gambling board warns that gambling online is illegal

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

The prolonged national issue of whether the South African government is to regulate and licence online gambling or not, took an unexpected turn this week when the provincial Gauteng Gambling Board made a point of warning the media that the pastime is currently illegal.

Despite many years of investigatory commissions and parliamentary debate, the national government continues to procrastinate on the regulatory issue, with no immediate changes to the law yet promulgated.

The Gauteng provincial gambling authorities appear to have seized the initiative at provincial level following a North Gauteng High Court judgement on the jurisdiction of online gambling transactions in the country which was handed down on August 20th by Judge N.B. Tuchten.

The effect of the decision means both domestic Internet operators who offer online gambling to South African residents for gain, and a player who takes part in online betting, are guilty of breaking the law.

The Business Times newspaper reports that the ruling also makes internet service providers accountable for the services and targets banned, and forbids financial institutions to process payments in respect of betting transactions.

The Gauteng Gambling Board says it will pursue any person or organisation which contravenes the gambling legislation.

Persons who are prosecuted and found guilty of offences under the Act could receive a fine of Rands 10 million or ten years in jail or both.

According to Gauteng Gambling Board head of legal services, Lucky Lukhwareni, online casinos are now up for prosecution.

“That’s why we approached the media to alert them of the judgment which makes online casino operations illegal, and if they continue we will have them arrested and fight for conviction,” he told Business Day.

He added that those entities that advertise or facilitate the advertisement of online gambling – including radio and television stations, print media and outdoor advertising agencies – will also face the prosecution.

Judge Tuchten’s decision is believed to be the result of a long-running case in which the operators of the Swaziland-based online casino Piggs Peak Online challenged the jurisdictional authority of South Africa, claiming its presence and physical facilities were in a neighbouring country. Local media have yet to contact the company for its reaction to the ruling.

Thus far the national government has remained silent on the provincial action, although legalisation and regulation are still apparently on the legislative table.

Cryptologic reports Q2 results, CEO resigns

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

One of the industry’s most respected and historically successful software developers, Cryptologic, has released another disappointing set of figures, at the same time announcing the resignation of chief executive officer Brian Hadfield.

The Q2/2010 report from the company notes: “After working with the Board on the restructuring plan, Brian Hadfield, Chief Executive Officer, has decided to leave the Company and resign as a Director. David Gavagan, the Chairman, assumes the role of CEO on an interim basis.”

The statement goes on to detail the performance and restructuring ongoing at the software company, noting:

  • Total revenues declined to $6.7 million (Q1,2010: $7.6 million) reflecting a change in accounting estimate relating to the amortisation of certain pre-paid royalties and continued difficult trading.
  • Hosted casino revenue at $5.8 million (Q1,2010: $5.8 million) Amortization of royalties and games now reported separately and no longer charged against casino revenues.
  • Branded games revenue increased to $1.5 million (Q1,2010: $1.3 million).
  • Poker and other revenues were down at $700,000 (Q1,2010: $1.3 million).
  • Amortization of royalties and games increased to $1.2 million (Q1,2010: $700,000) as a result of a change in accounting estimate relating to the amortization of certain prepaid amounts.
  • Operating, general & administrative and amortization costs amounted to $12.9 million (Q1,2010: $11.0 million).
  • Non-recurring costs of $7.3 million, comprising a non-cash impairment of intangible assets of $3.6 million, impairment of capital assets of $2.1 million and reorganization costs, including an additional provision of $1.7 million for the restructuring plan.
  • Net loss of $12.7 million (Q1,2010 Loss: $3.2 million).
  • Net cash at June 30, 2010: $17.4 million (Q1,2010: $19.7 million).

The company’s restructuring includes determined efforts to lower the cost base, reducing the workforce by Q4/2010 and other measures recommended by external consultants regarding Cryptologic’s hosted casino business.

Management reports that the outlook remains challenging, but that the Board “…continues to pursue avenues to enhance the company’s strategy in the interests of stakeholders.”

“Q2,2010 results were disappointing as slow progress was made amid continued challenging trading conditions to turn round the Company’s performance,” the statement advises shareholders.

It adds that some of its licensees experienced a decline in contribution from higher margin slot games and some negative impact from the World Cup. Excluding the impact of the change in accounting estimate for prepaid royalties, revenues from both the hosted casino and branded games licensing business were up sequentially.

Revenue from fully hosted virtual casino rooms provided to online gaming brand operators was unchanged at $5.8 million in Q2,2010 (Q1,2010: $5.8 million), with a multi-year oline casino deal with Betsafe a highlight.

Branded casino games delivered further growth as operators continued the rollout. Revenues from this segment increased to $1.5 million in Q2,2010 (Q1,2010: $1.3 million), despite some licensee sites being impacted by lower wagering activity caused by the World Cup.

51 new branded games were launched in the quarter, taking the total number of games rolled out by licensees and generating revenues to date to 150, with a further backlog of approximately 41 games expected to go live in 2010.

Since June 30, three clients have been signed for CryptoLogic’s new casino offering, Instant Click. They are Tain AB, SkillonNet and Nyx Interactive. This product is aimed at expanding the Company’s addressable market and shortening the time required to implement these new games on customers’ networks.
