Just when a lot of people thought that the Kansas City Chiefs would have an impact in 2009, their newly acquired quarterback, former New England stud Matt Cassel has gone down with an injury. 

Cassel was seen to have limped off the field in Saturday night’s 14-10 loss against Seattle, after he was sacked on the third play.

Cassel is one in a series of Kansas City Chiefs players who have suffered injuries in recent days, thus depleting their odds.

Brandon Flowers and Devard Darling are both out with injuries.  The UNDER 6 ½ regular season games won in 2009 remains the early favorite.

The Greek daily newspaper Ethnos reports that effective September 21st 2009 the government will be implementing a 10% tax on gambling winnings.

The news report reveals that a decision by the Ministry of Economy and Finances cancels the non-taxable threshold, which has been in force up to now, despite the strong opposition of gambling companies.

A 10% tax is levied on all winnings, upwards from €1, in respect of lottery, gambling games and stakes.

There will also be a 20% tax levied on all winnings larger than €1,000 won by any contest participant.

The UK online gambling group Betfair is fortunate that one of its major shareholders, Bernard Arnault (he holds around 10% of the stock, it is understood) has such good connections in France.

News breaking this week in that country indicates that he has been influential in securing a major ‘early bird’ advantage for the company – approval by French gaming authorities before the official liberalisation of the market in that country scheduled for early 2010.

The achievement means that Betfair will be in a position to advertise its P2P betting exchange services to French punters, securing an early opportunity to establish itself and its international brand in a potentially powerful market.

Arnault’s influence in France is not hard to understand – in addition to his Betfair interests he heads the luxury goods group Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), and he is one of France’s most successful and respected business moguls.

The village of Bagnone in Tuscany, Italy broke into spontaneous celebration (and some speculation) Saturday night as the news came through that the record breaking €147,807,299.08 main prize of the SuperEnalotto had at last been won.

Lottery officials revealed that the winner had bought the lucky numbers ticket at a bar in the village, setting the two thousand strong population alight with speculation on who the lucky winner was. The identity of the winner, according to the Agicos agency , was being kept secret.

The winning six-number combination was 2, 16, 38, 67, 70 and 84, the national lottery agency said, and the chances of getting all those digits right were only one in 622 million. The main prize had rolled over a record-breaking 86 times since January 2009, creating a frenzy of European interest and ticket buying.

Villager Giuliano Di Bernardo, interviewed by the ANSA news agency, said he had seen the winner, a 47-year-old local man, buy the winning ticket.

The next draw is on Tuesday, when the jackpot will be slightly less than $61 million.

Andy Murray’s American dream could become a reality in the view of a bookmaker. He is 9/4 second favourite to win the US Open Championship, according to Ladbrokes.

Poker is officially invading England.
