Business: Centrebet projects lower earnings

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Australian online-gaming operator Centrebet International Ltd. said last week that its earnings outlook for the fiscal year ending June 2009 would be worse than expected. The company forecast that its net earnings would be 30 percent lower than the 14.3 million Australia dollars ($10.4 million) it predicted in February.

The downgrade in projected net earnings accounts for a 20 percent decrease in net profit after tax, plus a 10 percent additional decrease due to several losses Centrebet incurred – including unrealized foreign exchange losses, a one-time loss due to the company’s withdrawn offer for All Sports Ltd., staff costs and a large bad-debt write-off.

Centrebet explained the largest portion of the downgrade as a result of poor February and March wagering win rates. All told, the company expects its net 2009 earnings to be between $5.4 million and $6.2 million, down from its $9.5 million in earnings last year.

Despite the negative earnings report, Centrebet Managing Director Con Kafataris said the company’s long-term outlook remains strong.

“Pleasingly, trading during April has been strong,” Kafataris said. “We conducted a detailed review of our cost base with annual cost savings in excess of ($1.4 million) being implemented, the Australian online wagering market continues to grow strongly and we will commence our fixed odds management contract with the (Western Australia), (Australian Capital Territory), and Tasmanian TABs in late May, estimated to deliver in excess of ($732,600) in net profit after tax for (the fiscal year ending June 2010).”

Shares in Centrebet International Ltd. (ASX:CIL) closed Friday at 1.20 Australia dollars per share in Sydney.

Chocolate Candy Betting Odds Pay Nearly Double at SBG Global

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

If you happen to like Chocolate Candy (the horse, not the Hershey bar), then SBG Global is definitely the place to bet him.

Gambling911.com has determined that SBG Global was offering the best odds on Chocolate Candy to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby as of Saturday morning:  A payout of $2000 compared to $1200 elsewhere.

"This is interesting because SBG Global had slashed Chocolate Candy’s odds to 10/1 or +1000 earlier in the week," observed Don Shapiro of Gambling911.com.

Brian Skirka of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association:

"Will it all go according to plan? Trainer Jerry Hollandorfer appears to have taken his time with this one. Guiding Chocolate Candy through a carefully thought out winter/spring campaign, Hollendorfer has been rewarded with gradual development – improving Beyers in each of Chocolate Candy’s last four races – and likely has a horse ready for a career effort on Derby Day. While Hollendorfer is relatively unknown in terms of the Kentucky Derby, his work with top-distaffer Hystericalady in recent years is proof-positive that he’s not out of his league with an upper-echelon horse. To win the Derby, Chocolate Candy most simply fulfill his trainer’s plan – run his best race on the first Saturday in May. A fast pace wouldn’t hurt either."

Ed McNamara of Newsday is not impressed:

"His post position may have something to do with the longer odds.

California-based colt hasn’t run on conventional dirt, and his speed figures on the manmade stuff are nothing special. At best, he’s a candidate for third or fourth to inflate exotic payoffs."

But with odds that pay $2000 for every $100 bet, if you like Chocolate Candy, you’ll want to bet him at SBG Global.

Svenska Spel reports weak 2008 poker revenues

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Sweden’s state gambling monopoly Svenska Spel has reported weaker online poker revenues in FY 2008, and declining group profit in the first quarter of 2009.

Poker revenues fell 3.6% to SEK 372 million (€34.6 million) in 2008 from SEK 385 million in 2007, the monopoly revealed in its annual report. The company attributed the decline to less interest in Internet poker, reporting:

“Both Svenska Spel and the casinos offer poker games. The casinos arranged a number of popular poker tournaments in 2008 and poker interest in casinos continues to increase. The internet boom of the four last years has subsided, but the game is still popular on svenskaspel.se,” the company reported.

Online poker operators need not necessarily be discouraged by the general remarks concerning the online poker industry; Svenska Spel can only speak for its own involvement, and it is widely accepted that many Scandinavian online poker players are active at poker websites elsewhere on the Internet, something the monopoly would like to constrain.

Other key performance indicators from the report are:

  • GGR up at SEK 22,800 million (FY 2007: SEK 21,716 million)
  • NGR up at SEK 9,804 million (FY 2007: 9,598 million)
  • Operation Margin down at 21.9% (FY 2007: 23.2%)
  • Profit down at SEK 5,108 million (FY 2007: SEK 5,247 million)
  • Headcount up at 1,720 (2007: 1,588)

Q.1,2009 group after-tax profit figures also showed a decline of SEK 133 million at SEK 1,238 million when compared with Q1:2008 numbers. The new CEO at Svenska Spel, Meta Persdottir, attributed the lower figures to recessionary elements and tougher competition.

IMEGA Vs UIGEA in July

Monday, April 13th, 2009

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) is under attack from all sides, Barney Frank will introduce a legislation this month which can overturn the UIGEA, the European Committee wants the World Trade Organisation to act against Americas monopoly on online gambling. To add to this list is the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association (iMEGA) court case against the UIGEA starting July 6th.

Originally, the court case of iMEGA against the anti online casino and gambling law UIGEA was planned for April, but was postponed while the Court of Appeals sent iMEGA’s proposal to its Merit Panel for a decision, to add the record with new evidence about the blocking of state lottery payments. IMEGA was awarded the right to go against the UIGEA last March by Judge Mary Cooper. IMEGA asked the Department of Justice to consider to allow new evidence that the UIGEA goes against the laws of legal online gambling, the Department of Justice was against the addition of this evidence saying it was not put before to the district court and that the objection against the law was not an ‘exceptional one’.

After the implementation of the UIGEA, credit card companies in states such as North Dakota and New Hampshire, have classified online transactions for state lotteries, as illegal online gambling transactions. The UIGEA exempts state lotteries clearly from new regulations, but credit card companies are ‘over-blocking’ instead of taking the risk not to comply with the new laws. The iMEGA believes that goes against everything the constitution stands for, and it should be repealed. The anti online gambling law known as UIGEA is on the verge of being repealed, there is so much resistance, that it is only a matter of time and your favourite land casino will be online.

Pro-Gambling Bill To Be Introduced To U.S. Congress

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

U.S. gamblers got some great news yesterday when it was announced by U.S. Rep. Barney Frank that he will introduce the Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (HR 2046) before the end of April.

Mr. Frank is the Chairman of the House Financial Committee and he’s also a very outspoken critic of the UIGEA and with this Act he is hoping to get the ball rolling to legalize online gambling in the U.S.

HR 2046 will be introduced as a standalone bill to give it as much attention as possible.”(Attaching HR 2046 to another bill) is not my intention. It would be a mistake. I want to do this with hearings, discussions and votes,” Frank told political-news magazine The Hill.

The bill, if all goes according to plan, would regulate and tax online gaming and this also includes the wagers that are made by players with online casinos, poker rooms and bookmakers. As for the date when this will get underway, it will be on the 20th of April 2009, when the 109th Congress returns from Easter break.

Even though nothing has been decided yet with regards to the regulation of online gaming in the U.S., this is a very important first step. Hopefully Mr. Frank can put his framework in place so that U.S. players can enjoy a well regulated gambling environment.

For now though, if you are a U.S. citizen, you can still enjoy these great online casinos that accept U.S players.
